Daily Discipline
One major commitment we must make in our lives is to chase becoming the best version of ourselves. Life teaches us invaluable lessons during both our hardest and best times. It reveals how we react to adversity and triumph, showing us our capacity to adapt and think critically.
As I reflect on this, one theme continually arises in my mind: Daily Discipline.
To many, “Daily Discipline” refers to consistent actions taken each day. Discipline can be defined as the quality of working in a controlled manner, adhering to specific rules or standards. While this definition serves us well, I believe daily discipline begins even before action takes place. It starts with waking up each day and committing to pursue the best version of yourself, even on the worst days. For me, Daily Discipline is the standard.
Daily Discipline is choosing every morning when you wake up; “I’m going to continue to chase the best version of me”. Even when its cold, dark, you’re sick, you’re not feeling your best, your tired, death, hardship, heart break…all of it. Daily Discipline is waking up and mentally choosing to continue to pursue the highest version of yourself.
I want to revisit a point I made earlier about the words “good” and “bad.” This distinction is crucial for understanding why Daily Discipline is so important.
Daily Discipline begins with recognizing that “good” and “bad” are highly subjective. What we perceive as “good” often isn’t what’s best for us in any single moment; rather, it serves the greater narrative of our lives. Similarly, what we label as “bad” may not be the worst in a singular context; it can also contribute to our overall journey.
By practicing Daily Discipline, we commit not only to our growth but also to understanding that our perceptions of “good” and “bad” aren’t solely based on our immediate feelings. Instead, they are rooted in what truly benefits our long-term journey. This principle resonates deeply with stoic philosophy, which I highly recommend exploring further — maybe for another essay.
This understanding requires us to make decisions aligned with our standards, even when they don’t seem beneficial in the moment. When we commit to this mindset, amazing opportunities come.
In essence, Daily Discipline isn’t just about doing the things we enjoy each day; it’s about tackling the tasks necessary for our growth, even when they feel “bad” or uncomfortable. It’s trusting in a bigger plan, even when immediate circumstances suggest otherwise.
Daily Discipline has been a powerful tool in my life, allowing me to pursue excellence every day, even during the most challenging times.
I hope this essay resonates with you. Thank you for taking the time to read it.
